Do I Have Sleep Apnea?

Getting tested for sleep apnea is very easy. The process usually begins with a conversation with your primary care physician.

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR

If you have trouble sleeping and are concerned that you may have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea, don’t wait for your doctor to ask you about your sleep habits. Be prepared to tell him or her about your symptoms. You may also wish to tell her if your bed partner complains of your snoring or gasping for air, or if you find yourself falling asleep often during the day. Remind your physician if you have any associated conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Your doctor may ask you questions about your sleep habits, your memory, your emotional state, your daily life, or your sexual function. These questions will help determine whether or not you need to be further tested for sleep apnea. He or she may also ask you to fill out a simple questionnaire such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale or the Berlin Questionnaire.

GET TESTED

After your discussion, the physician will probably suggest that you undergo formal diagnosis. Testing for sleep apnea can be done either at a sleep center or in your home. Your doctor will help you to decide whether going to a sleep center or being tested at home will be best for you.
