What Can I Do?
Getting tested for sleep apnea is very easy. The process usually begins with a conversation with a primary care physician.
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR
If your loved one has trouble sleeping and you are concerned that they may have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea, encourage them to talk to their doctor about their symptoms. If their snoring keeps you awake, or if you have seen them stop breathing during sleep, urge them to mention these symptoms to their doctor. They should remind their physician if they have any associated conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.
The doctor may ask questions about their sleep habits, memory, emotional state, daily life, or sexual function. These questions will help determine whether or not they need to be further tested for sleep apnea. Their doctor may also ask them to fill out a simple questionnaire such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale or the Berlin Questionnaire. In some cases, you may want to go to the doctor along with your partner to describe the symptoms you have observed.
GET TESTED
After discussing their symptoms, the physician will probably suggest that your loved one undergo formal diagnosis. Testing for sleep apnea can be done either at a sleep center or in your home. The doctor will help them to decide whether going to a sleep center or being tested at home will be the best option.
